August 23 - 25
A last minute decision to sail up to Marina Del Rey for my first over-night trip was made on Thursday. The weather had been great all week long, even Friday night - evident by the sunny picture above, I took when I got home from work.
When I woke up Saturday it was foggy, cold, and did not look great. It stayed that way all weekend. Mia came over around 1:30 and we left a little after 2pm from Redondo Beach. Sailed all the way up outside of the freighters anchored in front of El Segundo, and then headed straight for a 377 foot yacht that was anchored outside of Marina Del Rey. After checking that out, googling it’s name, Luna, on our phones, we headed into the marina.
I think it was about 5pm when we tied up to the guest dock, right next to a huge, very talkative sea lion. The sea lion’s sensitive side showed that night when he got all snuggly with another one on the dock, though. The guest slips are at Burton Chase park, which is directly across the water from my dad’s boat. So we tied up, put things away and conveniently walked over to have dinner.
On Sunday morning Mia and I sailed back around noon, the “check out” time for the guest slips. The sail back was smooth and quick. We bundled up in a blanket and sweatshirts even though it’s August, and the cold breeze pushed A Cenoura along. Close to Manhattan and Hermosa Beach the sun almost came out, and I felt like jumping in behind my boat and letting it tow me - This is a lot of fun, but you feel like a fishing lure for a shark. I just found out (late) that 2 white sharks are spotted off the water in Manhattan Beach in the last couple days. It feels like bodysurfing through the water though, it’s great.
