Rebedding a Stanchion
Rebedding deck hardware or anything that uses holes in the deck requires to make a water tight seal. I use butyl tape, it's easy to work with, inexpensive, and works great for decades (people say). On the really high-class expensive boats that pay a lot of attention to detail when being built, they taper the holes drilled into the deck so that there is a funnel-shape to give space for sealants to fill and seal better. Catalina did not do this to their boats but every time I rebed something I take the opportunity to do it the right way. Also with the butyl tape, it never "cures" it remains gummy and fills any and all voids between hardware and deck holes. You can install something, tighten it up. Then go back a weak later and do some final tightening and then peel away the tape that protrudes.
This is the funnel tapering that makes a big difference for making a better seal.
