December 1 & 2 2014
I’ve been getting a hang of frying bacon while cooking eggs at the same time in the same pan, this helps cut down on the amount of work, time and plates being used for breakfast. Not to mention that using my electric pan and microwave at the same time can be too much for the power supply.
On Saturday morning Mia and I had brunch with her dad, who drove up from San Diego. After brunch, in Manhattan Beach, we walked down to the beach and it appeared to be a really great day to sail. I already knew I needed to go to the pump-out dock, so we headed out. Unfortunately I should have taken a hint from the red flag flying at the harbor patrol building. Docking at the pump-out dock was a slight challenge, and then the machine pumped out everything, I switched it off to flush the pipes with water, and then the machine wouldn’t turn on again. Oops.
I raised the sails, and it was really gusty, probably a base 20 mph wind with stronger puffs. So I unfurled the jib to about a 90% reef. This was a first, and I was excited to be doing it. However, it was choppy and spraying pretty bad, so Mia and I agreed to turn around and head back in. Just as we tried that, the boat was caught in irons during the tack, the wind was coming at it so strong and the choppy waves confused the boats turning motion. Anyways, we got threw it and I tugged in the jib, and we were flying downwind on just the mainsail. Over the radio we heard chatter about a 27ft powerboat losing control in the channel and hitting other boats, then a small sailboat capsizing on the break-wall rocks.
Sunday was Groundhog Day, which also marks the 2ns anniversary of the heart attack that Mia’s aunt, Betsey had while hiking. That explains the photo we took holding a heart (nice and easy to find this close to Valentines Day) and sent it to her to celebrate her health.
Sunday was also the Super Bowl, the Seattle Sea Hawks defeated the Denver Broncos, the score was a lot to a little. At some point during the day I was walking up the dock when I saw this guy wearing all orange, my sneaky picture turned out pretty artsy. I went with Mia to her law school friends condo in Culver City around half time and watched only minutes of the entire game while hanging out with the group. It’s great to see the bond they all have formed by going through law school for almost three complete years now.
